I have always loved writing! Since my primary school days I have always been a writer. When I went to high school and discovered novels, I was completely sold! You would always find my nose deep in a Sidney Sheldon Novel or Danielle Steel and for this my literature was always on point! Not to mention I always bagged the best in English award.
I remember my English teacher encouraging me to enter a writing competition. I was ecstatic even though I did not win, I was a winner in my own eyes. I had poetry books that were on demand like a boss. This fueled me to write a book while in Uni.
All this while I never knew that I can start a blog and pour my heart out in article form and even make money from it. So when I learnt about blogging I jumped into the opportunity and was able to score paying clients! I got myself a website and started writing.
But for your to get paid to write you need:
- Love writing. You have to write from your heart, otherwise you won’t be able to connect with your audience.
- Know what you want to write about. You need to put your ideas on paper(or google docs) and decide what you want to write about. This will give you a clear perspective on which clients to approach.
- Have a portfolio. You need to have work that you have written. Not necessarily for past clients, it can be articles you have written for your won enjoyment.
- Have a website to show your work and advertise your work. The best way to showcase your work is to have a website. The good news is that you do not have to spend a lot of money in building a website. It’s pretty easy and you can do it for yourself. Here is what you need:
A. A domain name. What will your website be called? Eg valued.co.ke ( this is the name people type in on search engines like google to find your blog)
B. Hosting for your website. Your website needs a host/home. This is where your blog files are stored. Sort of like a file cabinet, but online.
C. The website. Now this is where the magic happens. This will be your actual blog and it is built on a website builder. Don’t worry it’s not as scary as it sounds. There are ready made templates that you can choose from and all you have to do is edit to customize! WordPress is the simplest, most popular way to create your own website or blog.
With these 3 steps you can start your blog in no time and it will cost you less that $5. Reason being, with Bluehost, you get web hosting for just $2.95 and you get a free domain for an year! Once you get Bluehost, you get thousands of FREE WordPress templates for you to choose from.
Now, what more to you need to put your writing skills to work?
